Waste Recycling & Resolve: Trash2Cash
Waste Management & Resolve: Trash to Cash is a project that attempts to recycle urban municipal wastes to recreate micro utility household products by training rag-pickers and slum dwellers of Kolkata. The recycling workshop handles 7-8 metric tons of municipal wastes every week that would otherwise have gone for landfill. The revenue returns suffice the livelihood of more than 100 households and have mainstreamed 70-80 women ragpickers as entrepreneurs. Total calculation of reduction of emission footprints accounts to 40700 kilo tons of carbon equivalent generating 17000 man hours, 40 tons of compost and almost 25,000.00 INR, revenue generated per month at an average. The project has been awarded by Match International Women’s Fund and nominated for the UNFCCC Lighthouse activity. On 13th August, 2014m US Ambassador Kathleen Stephens inaugurated the mechanization unit of the project and as a gesture towards launching the partnership of SAFE with the US Consulate, in Kolkata. Currently, 18 corporate giants have converged to the program by donating their office waste and achieving 70-80 percent segregation of waste at source. The program initially have been supported by Vodafone Essar Limited under CSR and in consecutive year Resolve:T2C received fund support from Innovative Challenge Fund, ICF, under Urban Development Ministry, Government of West Bengal.
Started in year 2011, with CSR fund support from Vodafone Essar Limited. In year , 2014 received UNFCCC, Momentum for Change, Lighthouse Activity Award, at COP 20, held in Lima, Peru. Project is supported by Match International Women Fund, since year 2014 till date.

Objectives: Resolve Trash2Cash is an urban climate initiative for resolving the municipal solid wastes of the city to an alternative livelihood for city’s waste workers and slum dwelling women, who are ostracized as the citizen’s of dirt and left at lurch as victims of flesh trade and social abuse. The project objective is to develop women led micro enterprise on waste recycling.
Target Group: Poor unemployed, women waste scavengers in cities.
More than 5,000 tonnes of solid waste is generated every day in the city of Kolkata, India. Dumping of this waste is polluting the groundwater and emitting large amounts of methane gas, which is 25 times more potent than carbon dioxide at trapping heat in the atmosphere.More than 50% of the urban poor are engaged in the waste trade as collectors, segregators or suppliers. But they are exposed to various health risks and earn extremely low wages.
Solution: Recycle: Trash2Cash is led by people who live in slums and are trained and paid to collect and recycle corporate and household waste in urban areas. This waste is segregated at the source and diverted from the landfills, which are slowly encroaching upon the East Kolkata Wetlands, to produce compost. Paper waste is recycled to produce value-added products in women-led workshops and organic waste is turned into compost.
This community-based solid waste management business model addresses two challenges. It offers people living in slums employment opportunities and it reduces the environmental hazards of open waste dumps.
Innovation: As a contributor to global climate change, waste ranks third behind energy and transportation. Resolve: Trash2Cash is recycling solid waste and reducing landfill emissions. The reduction of methane emissions as a direct result of diverting organic waste from the landfills and the recycling of paper, is helping to mitigate climate change. Each month, slum residents collect and recycle 1,000 kg of waste paper and compost 2,000 kg of food waste. This is reducing CO2-equivalent emissions by 520 metric tonnes each year. Resolve: Trash2Cash is not only scalable but also replicable in other urban poor areas around the world. Other urban areas can replicate the enterprise’s supply-driven waste management system. Partnerships can be created with corporate offices that do not have a system for recycling in place. The paper can be easily recycled into products such as pen stands, dustbins, photo frames, etc. The waste collected for compost has a large market demand in the urban, agricultural and government sectors.
Resolve: Trash2Cash is creating sustainable jobs for the urban poor, particularly women, and unemployed young people. So far, the initiative has trained more than 300 women to turn recycled paper into handicrafts. This empowers women and provides economic security. Resolve: Trash2Cash is not only scalable but also replicable in other urban poor areas around the world.

SCRIPT (Sustainable Consumption and Recycling Interventions for Paper and Textiles) for Reducing Urban Climate Footprints
Paper and textiles in urban life has indubitable utility and persistent demand and as well has substantial emission and unsustainable consumption footprints. Sustainable usage and recycling interventions for these towards better resource utilizations would be impactful adaptive measures in defending climate change.
Goals and principles of 10YFP pertaining to Sustainable Consumer Production that is about increasing resource efficiency and promoting sustainable lifestyles is the central tenet of this project. It offers important contributions for all three dimensions of sustainability ensuring poverty alleviation and transition towards low-carbon and climate-pro lifestyle categorically for the urban ecosphere. This project substantially contribute to 10YFP by augmenting the product life through post consumption recycling and reuse of two significant consumer products, paper and textile, and as well reduce consumption through waste minimization awareness drives. Ecofriendly technology for recycling paper and textile through paper molding, mache layering and rolling to make micro-utility products not only increase the product life but also reduce emission footprints substantially by decreasing a part of landfill mass and as well diminishing water demands in its life period.
This project is integral to efforts for downscaling urban emission footprints, especially through municipal solid waste disposal planning. Therefore, it derives obvious relationship with integrated solid waste management for climate smart city and habitat conservation in the urban context. Abatement of pollution is synergistic to the said area of activity, while reducing landfill emission and rescuing ravished urban wetlands and water bodies with dumped municipal waste are related action plans.
